On January 28, 2022, Kristine Wellenstein scooped a historic Mega Millions jackpot worth $426 Million from Los Angeles!
She was the sole winner to guess all the numbers right: 03-16-25-44-55/13 on that draw, after the Mega Millions jackpot had rolled over for 27 consecutive draws. Not only is she becoming one of the biggest Mega Millions winners, but she is also the biggest lottery winner in California.
Kristine Wellenstein remembered checking Mega Millions results: “When I realized I’d won, I was overcome with so many emotions, but mostly gratitude”
She actually did not want to become a public figure, but Californian law does not allow players to remain anonymous. However, she chose not to have her picture taken. She declared that she lives a private life but that she wishes to do some good with her money mentioning that it is important for her to use her new wealth wisely. She added: “I want to help society and support local and global initiatives, and my team is ready to help me achieve these goals”.
The Chevron station where she purchased her Mega Millions ticket will also receive a $1 Million bonus for selling the winning ticket. As for Wellenstein, she opted for the lump sum payment to collect her winnings and will take home approximately $290 Million (before taxes).
“We love big jackpots and big wins in California,” said California Lottery director Alva W. Johnson. “Of course, higher jackpots usually translate into more sales, which means more money for public education, which we are proud to support… Not only do we congratulate Ms. Wellenstein on this amazing win, but we also congratulate all students, from elementary school to universities, which also benefit greatly.” Wellenstein winning draw also allowed California Lottery to donate about $40 Million to the state’s public schools.
Another important detail worth mentioning: There is no local tax on lottery winnings in California, so Kristine only has to pay federal taxes.
